Milledgeville Singer's Guild (MSG), a community choral group, meets here at First Presbyterian, in the choir room, from 7:00-8:45pm each Monday night. The group is directed by our own Caroline Carson, Music Director.

Thank you for supporting this community chorus. We start back Monday,January 9th @ 7pm! Getting ready for our spring concerts. All parts are needed. Being able to read music is not required, but it is helpful. Caroline has a marvelous repertoire in the works for our Christmas concerts. If you personally don't sing but know of someone who does, please let them know about this great opportunity. If you are interested in joining the guild, please contact Caroline.

HABITAT
FOR HUMANITY

The annual Habitat for Humanity Community Service will be held on Sunday, September 11 @ 4:00pm at All Faiths Chapel (Central State Hospital Grounds). Our own Caroline Carson will again be conducting this musical service with David Cole as accompanist. Several church choirs from the Milledgeville community will be involved in this event. Music practices will be held on Tuesdays @ 7:00pm at First Presbyterian Church. We will meet in the choir loft. If you are interested in participating and/or want to get your church choir involved, please contact Caroline Carson.

On Thursday, December 14th, the Faith-build house [the third for the year and the 14th since the local affiliate started in 1994] was completed and dedicated. Mary Baker was the family support partner to the Fluellen family. A River of Life team helped landscape the Faith-build house as well. The team included youth from our church and was led by Ian Hixson and Frank Forts.
In early December, the affiliate celebrated its 10th anniversary. In recognition for the way in which our Community Chorus event brought together different churches during Building on Faith week this year, Habitat for Humanity International awarded the local affiliate a $2000 grant. Finally, construction has started on the first of four houses to be built in 2005.
Thanks to our own Caroline Carson for directing a beautiful event commemorating "Building on Faith" week in celebration of our local chapter's 10th anniversary. A whopping $1450 was raised to help complete the two houses currently under construction.

We urgently need family support partners to partner with our homeowners as their house is constructed and a year beyond that to help mentor our families as they make the transition from renting to owning their home.
We also have ideas for Sunday School group projects!

MEXICO WORK MISSION
From June 11-June 20, ninety-one volunteers from Northeast Georgia Presbytery will build houses in Piedras Negras, Mexico. This is our thirteenth year to work with Contructores Para Cristo (Builders for Christ). We ask you to pray for us and this mission on each of the days we will be gone.
On June 5th, we will commission those who are representing First Presbyterian, Milledgeville on the Mission Trip to Mexico. They are listed below with their prayer partners:

RIVER OF LIFE
The Janet Forts Goldsmith River of Life will be held December 10-12th. This is a local community service project for youth and adults. Activities will include yard work, holiday decorating, and carpentry for adult-supervised youth as well as worship and feellowship activities. Children will be able to go caroling at several locations as well.
We are hoping to have a core of approximately 100 workers. We also are looking forward to visiting with Janet's family. If you are interested in assisting with this event, please complete the River of Life form available in the church office. More detailed information soon....
If you know someone who might benefit from any type of service project, please do not hesitate to submit the information to either Susan McGill or Donna Matta.

Support Group for the Visually Impaired Persons
(VIP)

Over three million people in the U.S. have significant visual impairment; a smaller number are totally blind. The losses and needs experienced by persons adjusting to visual impairment. We list these as a reference for others:
  1. Loss of psychological functioning, often with depression.
  2. Loss of confidence because of all the things you no longer can do. (ex. Driving)
  3. Loss of reality. You are unsure of people's moods as you cannot see facial expressions.
  4. Loss of basic skills: mobility, participation in visual activities.
  5. Loss of techniques of daily living: putting on make-up, shaving, personal grooming, buying groceries, sewing- just to name a few.
  6. Loss of ease of communication: cannot fill out forms or read other printed material, cannot take down data/information from someone speaking, cannot read medicine bottles and doctor's orders.
  7. Loss of appreciation/enjoyment of the world: cannot see things in nature, art, visual activities.
  8. Loss of career/occupation, financial security. (May include lack of income to purchase helpful visual aids not covered by Medicare.)
  9. Loss of recreation.
  10. Loss of social adequacy.

The needs of VIP's:
  1. A comprehensive low vision evaluation.
  2. To know about resources.
  3. To have encouragement from family.
  4. To educate others about our problems and needs.
  5. Be able to communicate openly with others.
  6. To take advantage of any rehabilitation services available.
  7. Focus on what you CAN DO, not what you can't do.

December 5th was very special for our support group. Dr.Julian Nussbaum, Professor and Chairman of the Eye Care Center at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, was our guest speaker. It was a cold and rainy day but the Fellowship Hall was filled with 56 members and guests from Milledgeville, Gordon, Eatonton, Warner Robins, and Athens. Mary Beth Busbee and two friends came from Duluth; they live in a retirement community and have asked for help in starting a low vision support group.
Dr.Nussbaum spoke to us about current research and treatments for macular degeneration. He answered our questions and gave us hope for the future. We are indeed grateful for his visit.
Special thanks go to our drivers and to those who contributed refreshments and helped with serving. Our helpers included friends from Hope Lutheran and First Methodist.
Next meeting is Wednesday, January 18th. Our speaker will be demonstrating talking telephones and other helpful aids.
We are having more people needing transportation to the meetings on th 3rd Wednesday of each month. If you can volunteer, give your name to Martha or Harry.
We appreciate you and many of our members speak warmly of this service of FPC.

PRISON FAMILY LUNCH
Another outstanding Prison Family Luncheon was held on Saturday, September 17th at the First Presbyterian Church. We had about 60 people to make the trip from Atlanta. They seemed very happy to be here and if the compliments we received on the food were an indication, they really enjoyed our hospitality tremendously. The following people helped to make this event the success that it was: Arnie and Rae Wade, Cliff and Nancy Holbrook, Charlotte and Joe Owens, Libby and John Lounsbury, J.F., Tsu-Ming, and Jocelyn Yao, Rosemary Begemann, Anne Dennis, Andrew Townsend and Millie Murphy. Anne Dennis interviewed people and took pictures for an upcoming article in the Union Recorder.
Our next luncheon is scheduled for Saturday,January 21.If you have never worked on a luncheon or haven't done so for a while, then I would really encourage you to join us. Please let me know if you're interested in joining us.

RELAY FOR LIFE
American Cancer Relay For Life will be Friday,April 8th @ 7pm through Saturday,April 9th at 10am. Betty Hattaway and J.F. Yao are the co-captains for our church team this year. We now have 18 members! Anyone wanting to donate should make checks out to the American Cancer Society and give it to a team member (names are listed on the bulletin board in the hallway). See Betty or J.F.. We had luminaries in honor of and as memorials for church members. Even though luminaries don't count in our fund-raising amount, the money still goes to cancer research. We need to get our group together ASAP. Thank you.




FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION
Bring nonperishable food for the needy on Sunday,October 9th. The children will bring the baskets forward during the Worship Service.Our baskets were not full enough last month. Let's work together to fill them up this month! This food is distributed to needy people in our community.
We have spoken to the Department of Family and Children Services about what items they most need to stock their Food Pantry. They have requested foods that could serve as entire meals such as soups, stews and dumplings. They also frequently run out of dry foods such as pastas and rices. Canned meats such as tuna and chicken are another good idea. While they do appreciate any items, smaller sized items (as opposed to bulk sized items) are easier to disperse to several families. Please, keep these ideas in mind when donating to our monthly food collection on the second Sunday of each month. Thank you. Our church also sends DFCS a monthly check to help the needy.

RECYCLING PROJECT
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Oconee is recycling injet and laser cartridges as a fundraising project to benefit the work of the agency. If you have catridges you would like to donate rather than discard, please bring them by the church office. This is a chance to help a local agency which seeks to improve the lives of children in our community while, at the same time, benefitting the environment.
CASA
Ocmulgee Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA)is a non-profit organization that recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to advocate for abused children in court. We need volunteers!
Ocmulgee CASA is currently recruiting volunteers to start training in October. The training course is 30 to 40 hours and will take place two nights a week starting in October. Villa International
The Session recently received a letter about Villa International which reads, in part:
"In 1966, a young woman from abroad, who was an international professional related to CDC, killed herself on Easter weekend. She was living alone and isolated. This tragic loss touched the hearts of many...Villa International in Atlanta was begun in 1967 and the doors have remained opened as we fulfill our call to use the gift of Christian hospitality. The motto has been, "where the world comes home", but since September 11, 2001, many families and countries in the developing nations have become fearful of travel to Atlanta for training. We believe in this vital ministry of our faith, and feel it will continue to be needed now and in the future.
"To ease the mounting cost of empty rooms, Villa International Atlanta is opening its doors to aid families with loved ones in the Atlanta hospital systems. You can also stay for a few days and nights if you have other business or recreational events.

Would you be interested in participating in GC&SU's "Connections" community program coordinated by the International Education Center?

MAKE YOUR GLOBAL CONNECTION! We have new students from Spain, China, Germany and many other countries on campus this semester and are currently looking for volunteers to become "Connections" partners for our new international students. "Connections" is a volunteer cross-cultural friendship program that matches local individuals and families with our international students. Connections partners have the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships by sharing a whole range of social experiences from boating out on the lake to holiday celebrations. Connections partners get together on an occasional basis as time permits. Simply sharing a meal or providing a ride to the store can be extremely meaningful and helpful to new students as they get settled into life in Milledgeville. The Connections relationship should be one in which both sides benefit. From your Global Connection you may learn to cook a variety of ethnic dishes or how to say greetings in Spanish. From the Local Connection, the student may develop an appreciation for American football or learn "Southern" expressions. In Our Best Interest
A community-based support group for women in abusive marriages. Meets every other Thursday at 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Childcare is provided.

Harriet's Closet
If you have any costume jewelry (earrings, brooches, necklaces, etc.) languishing unused at home, consider donating it to Harriet's Closet, a facility at Oconee Regional Medical Center. The Closet, administered by volunteers of the Civic Woman's Club of Milledgeville, is a facility where Baldwin County residents being treated for cancer may acquire wigs, turbans, jewelry, lotions, makeup, protheses and medical supplies. Please, place your donations in the Harriet's Closet Box on the shelf in Glen Kohlhagen's office, and indicate the name of the giver. Thank you.

Baldwin Christian Learning Center
"Members of First Presbyterian Church are supporting the Baldwin Christian Learning Center, by participating in fund raisers and making financial donations. Eighteen members of FPC have contributed over $2,000, including more than one contribution from some members. Other churches are also supporting this ministry through pledges to contribute on a monthly basis in addition to the donations which individual members make. Baldwin County will join other communities in Georgia and across America to offer offer an opportunity for students to earn credits in academic courses based on Biblical principles for youth regardless of race, color,religious affiliation,sex, age, national origin or handicap. The program is voluntary and parental permission is required for attendance. The center is a non-profit, tax exempt Georgia Corporation where 11th and 12th grade students can earn credits as part of a released time program. There are no charges, there is no tuition or fees and no tax dollars are received from the State or Federal government. It has been declared constitutional by the US Supreme Court (Zorach vs Clausen)"
