IMG_1293BIOGRAPHY OF REV. SUSAN BALFOUR
The Reverend Susan Elizabeth Balfour is a cradle Presbyterian from South Florida. She has been extremely active in the church from an early age, and, as a teenager, determined to go to seminary, graduating from Union-PSCE with a Master in Divinity degree in 2009. Prior to seminary, Susan worked in the secular world as an office manager, a church secretary, a legal assistant, and a conservation administrator. She began her professional ministry at a Baptist church in 2008; in 2010, she was ordained by that congregation to the Ministry of the Gospel. In the following year, she returned to her denominational home to serve as Pastor of a Presbyterian church in rural Virginia, and was ordained to the Ministry of the Word and Sacrament. In 2013, Susan left Virginia to return to her parents’ home in North Carolina, where she assumed responsibility for managing the family’s affairs during the crisis of her father’s sudden incapacitation and death, and subsequently dedicated herself to helping her mother reconstitute her life without her husband of 48 years. During this time, Susan has continued to serve the PC(USA) as a Stated Supply Pastor for a small mountain church, honing her teaching and preaching skills.

Susan’s faith journey has been rich; through both educational and life experiences, she has learned not only how to speak about God, but how to look for God even in the midst of difficult and painful circumstances. She has experienced abuse, co-dependency, the substance abuse of her spouse, caring for elderly parents, confronting death, and some of life’s most difficult questions. She leans heavily on God’s grace and seeks to share that grace with all whom she meets. True to the Presbyterian tradition, Susan believes strongly in the academic side of the life of faith, and has a passion for passing on what she learns and discovers about God’s will for us and how we may live as Christians in an often contrary world. She treasures the connectional nature of our denomination, valuing the relationships that we build within the church and with the community.

Susan comes to us along with her mother, Sandra, and her thirteen-year-old rescue Brittany-Beagle, Mosey. She also has a sister, two nephews, and a niece, who live in North Carolina. Susan enjoys traveling, horseback riding, photography, and spending time on the water. The high point of her week is always Sunday mornings, when she gathers with the faithful in the office of divine worship. Susan is delighted to be called to the First Presbyterian Church of Milledgeville, and looks forward to joining us in ministry!
